2027 Social Security Wage Base Increases to $192,300: What Employers Need to Know

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has officially announced the 2027 Social Security taxable wage base, and employers should prepare for higher payroll tax costs in the coming year.

Effective January 1, 2027, the maximum amount of employee earnings subject to Social Security tax will increase to $192,300, up from $184,500 in 2026.

That's a $7,800 increase, meaning employers could pay up to $483.60 more in Social Security taxes per employee in 2027.

Here's what employers need to know about the new limits, payroll tax calculations, and preparing for the year ahead.

What Is the 2027 Social Security Wage Base?

The 2027 Social Security wage base is $192,300.

This is the maximum amount of an employee's annual earnings subject to the 6.2% Social Security payroll tax.

Both employees and employers pay Social Security tax at 6.2% of covered wages, up to the annual wage base.

Once an employee's year-to-date taxable Social Security wages reach $192,300 in 2027, Social Security tax withholding and the corresponding employer tax generally stop for the remainder of the calendar year.

The new amount was confirmed in the SSA's official 2027 announcement.

How Much More Will Employers Pay in Social Security Taxes in 2027?

For an employee earning at least $192,300 in Social Security taxable wages, the maximum employer Social Security tax increases from $11,439 in 2026 to $11,922.60 in 2027.

That's an additional $483.60 per employee.

These examples assume each employee earns at least the annual taxable wage base in both years. Actual employer costs depend on employee wages and other payroll circumstances.

For organizations with higher-paid employees, this is an important consideration when finalizing 2027 payroll budgets.

Is There a Medicare Wage Limit in 2027?

No. Unlike Social Security, Medicare tax has no annual wage base limit.

Employers and employees continue to pay Medicare tax at 1.45% on all covered wages.

Employers must also withhold an additional 0.9% Medicare tax when an employee's Medicare wages exceed $200,000 during the calendar year.

The Additional Medicare Tax applies only to the employee. Employers do not pay a matching 0.9% tax.

What Should Employers Do to Prepare for 2027?

The updated wage base takes effect January 1, 2027, making year-end payroll preparation especially important.

Employers should focus on five areas:

1. Review 2027 payroll tax settings. Confirm that payroll systems will apply the new $192,300 Social Security wage base beginning with wages paid in 2027.

2. Update payroll budgets. Account for the potential increase in employer Social Security taxes, particularly for higher-paid employees.

3. Check year-end and first-payroll timing. Payroll taxes generally follow the year wages are paid, so confirm that payroll dates and tax settings are correct when transitioning into 2027.

4. Review employee communications. Employees may notice differences in Social Security withholding as they reach the new wage base during the year.

5. Confirm payroll calculations and reporting. Accurate year-to-date wage tracking, tax withholding, and payroll reporting help prevent avoidable corrections.

Employers with employees working across multiple states should also review applicable state and local payroll tax requirements, which are separate from the federal Social Security wage base.
